The lively university city of La Plata was nicknamed “The City of Diagonals” due to its unique avenues that crisscross a regular grid of streets. Admire the magnificent neo-Gothic Cathedral of La Plata. Inspired by the medieval churches of France and Germany, the cathedral features two elegant steeples that rise 112 metres high. Marvel at the stained-glass windows from Plaza Moreno before ascending one of the towers for panoramic city views.

Are you fascinated by architecture? Tour the Heritage-listed Curutchet House, designed by the acclaimed French architect, Le Corbusier. Remarkably modern for its time, the four-storey home was built in 1953 and appeared in the award-winning 2009 film “The Man Next Door”.

Step back in time at La Plata Museum and explore over three million treasures reflecting Argentina’s natural history. Housed in a grand neoclassical building, the museum’s acclaimed collection includes Egyptian relics, Jesuit ruins, fascinating insects and dinosaur fossils.

Stroll through the landscaped gardens of Paseo del Bosque, taking in the vast variety of subtropical plants. Meet native wildlife at the park’s Zoo de La Plata or go stargazing in the planetarium and observatory. Afterwards, discover La Plata’s thriving craft beer scene at Argentina’s oldest craft brewery, La Posta del Angel.

Getting around

La Plata is a 45-minute taxi or 1.5-hour bus ride from Jorge Newbery Airfield in the centre of Buenos Aires. La Plata is an excellent place to explore on foot, while taxis and buses are also available.
