About La Recoleta Cemetery
Considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world, La Recoleta Cemetery is the final resting place for many of Argentina’s most notable citizens. It was established around a convent in the 18th century and converted into a public cemetery in 1822.
Admire the Neo-Classical gates at the entrance, then wander along the tree-lined walkways framed by more than 4,500 vaults. Marble mausoleums decorated with Art Nouveau, Baroque and Neo-Gothic sculptures dot the cemetery grounds, many of which are still used by wealthy Argentinian families today.
Pay your respects at the grave of former First Lady Eva Perón and admire the statue of Liliana Crociati de Szaszak, who was killed by an avalanche while honeymooning in the Alps. Also of note is the impressive grave of Argentina’s seventh president, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, which was designed by the politician himself.
