About Santiago Metropolitan Park
Encompassing the peak of San Cristóbal and its surrounding hills, Santiago Metropolitan Park is an urban green space north-east of Santiago’s city centre. It’s one of the largest urban parks in the world and is home to the Chilean National Zoo, Jardin Botanico Chagual and an innovative children’s playground.
Ride the cable car from the base of San Cristóbal to its sanctuary, which is dominated by a large statue of the Virgin Mary, then continue by funicular to explore the bohemian streets of Barrio Bellavista. Here you can get up close to native animals and birds at the Chilean National Zoo, which is home to guanacos, Humboldt penguins and the endangered pudú deer.
Learn about Chile’s Mediterranean-climate plant species at the Jardín Botánico Chagual, which is a vital research and conservation hub for endemic flora. The Santiago Metropolitan Park is also home to the Bicentenary Children’s Park, which features treehouses, water features and a performance amphitheatre.
Getting there
The Santiago Metropolitan Park’s lower funicular station is a 15-minute walk from the Baquedano subway station, which connects along the Red and Green lines. Santiago International Airport is around 20 minutes’ drive away.
