About Sokcho

A collection of crystalline lakes, Buddhist temples and a mountainous landscape sets the scene for Sokcho city, situated in the Gangwon-do province. Tourists are drawn to the wafting smells of seafood seeping out of Abai Shikdang and come to embrace the natural wonders contained within nearby Seoraksan National Park.

Things to do

Abai Shikdang was featured in the Korean Drama “Autumn in My Heart” and now attracts tourists from around the globe for a chance to dine on squid sushi at one of the classic seafood restaurants. Another popular dish is the cold noodle Naengmyeon. Take the ferry across the water to the coveted location for a night your taste buds won’t soon forget.

Seoraksan National Park boasts the third highest mountain in South Korea and is most popular in autumn when the park transforms into a landscape of colour. You can hike to the Yukdam waterfall or climb the 800 steps up to the unique rock formation Ulsanbawi. For an exciting change of pace, ride the cable car up to the Gwongeumseong Fortress.

The white sands of Sokcho Beach are ideal for swimming and sunbathing, conveniently located just a 500-metre walk from the Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. Soak in the views of crystal clear water and surrounding pine trees and take the time to chat with the hikers that pass through here.

Sokcho is known for its hot springs, so when you’re ready to unwind, head over to Cheoksan and immerse yourself in the slightly blue-tingled water. Here you can detox your body and let your travel woes fall away.

Getting around

Don’t expect easy transportation around this area, as the region is vast and buses are infrequent. There are two main terminals spaced far from each other, and the closest train station is an hour away in Gangneung. There are ferries that will take you over to Abai Village.
