About Chungcheongnam-do

Bulging into the Yellow Sea, Chungcheongnam-do is a coastal province that includes the idyllic islands of Taeanhaean National Park. You’ll discover picturesque plains dotted with cultural landmarks and historic museums, along with numerous hot springs.

Things to do

Travel across the Yeonnyukgyo Bridge to Anmyeon Island, which is ringed by beautiful beaches and dotted with restaurants serving freshly-caught seafood. Follow one of the walking trails through the 100-year-old Anmyeondo Recreational Forest and photograph the famous sunset from Kkotji Beach.

Venture into the rugged landscapes of the Deoksungsan Mountains to witness the cultural treasures of Sudeoksa Temple. It’s home to the 14th-century Daeungjeon main hall, which is the oldest wooden structure in South Korea, together with an elephant-based stone lantern and a Goryeo Dynasty three-tier pagoda.

Interested in the history of South Korea? Visit the Independence Hall of Korea in Sambang-ro, which displays cultural artefacts dating back 5,000 years. It focuses on Korea’s struggle for independence during Japan’s colonial rule, with exhibitions highlighting what life was like in the 19th century and historical photographs of the armed resistance and patriotic movements that took place.

Also of note is the Gongju National Museum, which exhibits cultural artefacts excavated from Chungcheongnam-do. Witness the golden belt, bracelet and bronze mirrors from the 6th-century Muryeong Royal Tomb, together with large stone bowls once used to store water.

Getting around

Chungcheongnam-do is located around four hours’ train ride south of Seoul and slightly further from Incheon International Airport. Buses connect the towns and cities across the province, while boats access the offshore islands.
