One of Tianjin’s most recognisable landmarks, the Tianjin Eye is a 120-metre-tall Ferris wheel that offers uninterrupted views of the cityscape and Hai River. It’s a short walk from the Drum Tower of Nanjing, where you can discover Ming dynasty-era architecture and history. Don’t miss the nearby Tianjin Old Town Museum, which boasts ancient Chinese artefacts, including plates and porcelain.

Need some retail therapy? Head to Guwenhua Jie, the city’s Ancient Culture Street where you’ll find traditional street stalls and cultural attractions, such as old buildings. You can also visit the Tianjin Quanye Bazaar to purchase discounted goods, handmade clothing and unique jewellery.

Venture down to the city’s waterfront to discover the Taku Forts, which are riverside bastions and fortresses that were used during the opium wars between China and Great Britain. Afterwards, admire Tianjin’s European architecture at the French-style Porcelain House, which stocks an array of one-of-a-kind porcelain objects.

Treat the whole family to a day out in Tianjin Water Park, where you can ride on a Ferris wheel, stroll through gardens and row across lakes. The neighbouring Tianjin Zoo is the perfect place to get up close with exotic birds and reptiles, along with deer, ponies, pandas and hippopotamuses. In the afternoon, wander through the Treaty Port Area while admiring century-old European buildings.

Getting around

Tianjin is easily reached by flying into Tianjin Binhai International Airport, catching a long-distance bus or a train to Tianjin Railway Station. The city is well-serviced by metro trains, taxis, buses and a light rail.
